In a brief Facebook statement, Cairo Runners announced the cancellation of its long-awaited Pyramids Run (#PyramidsRun) for security reasons. The breaking news was published around 8 pm on 8/10, hours before the historic run was due to kickstart.Cairo was geared to witness one of the most popular sport events taking place at the backdrop of its most renowned monuments. The official sponsors include the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Youth amongst others.
The brief statement says “The Pyramids Run scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled! After we obtained all necessary clearances and authorizations from the Ministry of Antiquities – Ministry of Tourism – Ministry of Youth and Sports – Pyramids Tourism Police, the Security Directorate and all relevant entities; we have been informed a few hours ago that tomorrow’s (Friday, Oct. 9) event has been cancelled for security-related reasons.”
The statement caused a stir on Social Media on Thu night; many had voiced utter disappointment, yet support and sympathy with the organizers . Cairo Runners Social Media team stayed vigilant overnight responding to inquiries and confirming the cancellation. Registered participants have also received text messages on their mobile phone announcing the cancellation.
Cairo Runners is a leading running community that kicked off a couple of years ago, with only tens of runners. Calling on Egypt to adopt a healthier, energetic lifestyle, they took up the empty streets of Cairo on Friday mornings and gained trust and populairty amongst participants and onlookers. Now it runs Egypt with thousands of active participants each time; some of the most memorable ones are Taba Run and MS Day Zamalek Run earlier this year.
