Kids are known to be full of energy and playfulness, but, if this energy is not exerted, they can cause tantrums! It can be challenging for parents to select activities in which they can enroll their child. Sports, dancing classes, or martial arts? What about CrossFit?



We were surprised to find a CrossFit box that has classes for children. So we had a chat with the co- founder and the head coach of Engine 38, Mourad Gaber. Gaber told us that there are many reasons CrossFit is a great discipline for children. He explained how CrossFit is a great base for kids to carry them into other sports and also develop them as healthy fit human beings.

Mourad took us through their CrossFit offerings for kids. The classes are divided according to the age groups, from 4-7 years and from 8-11. Each age group is trained differently where the younger ones, for example do their exercises in the form of games. They do squats and burpees, but in a much simpler and more fun way. For instance, there is a ‘duck walk’ and a ‘gorilla move’, which motivate young kids to engage in these exercises.

You might be thinking about weightlifting, do these kids lift? The young age group use pvc pipes that are completely safe but still gives them a CrossFit feel, while the older ones lift very light weights under Mourad’s direct supervision.

CrossFit Engine’s program works with kids on sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, listening skills, self-discipline and manners. As their bodies get fitter and their abilities expand, children generally become more physically active and more self-conscious in other athletic situations. You should let your kids try for themselves. If you live far away from the 6th of October area, you will have a long drive!
