Ali Farag Statement (Twitter)

“Miguel was much more aggressive than me in the first, but with Nour and Karim in my corner I turned it round and that gave me confidence for the rest of the match,” Farag told the tournament’s official website after the match, referring to his fellow Egyptian participants.

Farag improved on the outcome of his 2015 and 2016 World Championship campaigns when he was eliminated at the quarter-final stage on both occasions, losing to Frenchman Gregory Gaultier and compatriot Mohamed ElShorbagy respectively.

At least a third Egyptian will join Farag in the semis as Marwan ElShorbagy and Karim Abdel-Gawad meet in an all-Egyptian semi final later on Friday. Mohamed ElShorbagy, Marwan’s brother, booked a last-four berth with a 3-1 win over the veteran Nick Matthew on Thursday.

Women Contest

In the women’s contest Egypt’s  Raneem El Welily faces Malaysia’s Nicol David in a tough semi-final, also on Friday.
