We all know one of these people with fast metabolism; they eat chocolates and fries and you eat an apple, yet you look triple their size! You know who they are–those people who seem to eat whatever they want and never gain a pound. They have great skin and hair, toned muscles and tons of energy. But what determines the metabolic rate? What causes slow metabolism?
Factors That Affect Metabolism
1) Body composition:
The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn, even at rest. That’s why people with slow metabolism are always advised to do weight training to increase their muscle mass.
Men usually have more muscle mass and less body fat than women of the same age. So, yes men have higher metabolic rates, thus, they burn more calories.
As you get older, your muscle mass decreases, which slows down the rate at which you burn calories. That’s why some people find it harder to lose weight as they grow older.
There are other factors that can contribute to weight gain other than a slow metabolism:
- Eating too many calories, don’t eat 5,000 calories a day and whine about your metabolism!
- Not exercising regularly.
- Certain medications like cortisone do cause weight gain.
- Unhealthy habits, such as routinely not getting enough sleep, binge/emotional eating.
If you’re concerned about your slow metabolism and your weight, first make sure that you are not gaining weight because of unhealthy habits. Some fitness centers can help you check your metabolic rate and body composition. All you need to do to beat a slow metabolism, is a proper eating plan and well rounded exercise program.
