October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is an annual, global campaign to increase awareness of the disease. It aims at reminding us to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.
Prevention is better than cure!
Baheya Hospital is the first hospital in Egypt for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, which offers its services for free to the general public. The cost of treating one woman is around EGP 100,000, all paid for by Baheya managing NGO Resala.
The 10,000 sq. m premise was donated to charity by its namesake Mrs Baheya Wahby, the niece of prominent Egyptian actor Youssef Wahby, by her family after she lost her battle to breast cancer.
Statistics in Egypt show that one in eight women is likely to develop breast cancer, and 17.6% do not win their battle against cancer. Early detection of cancer raises the chances of successful treatment to 98 % in the first stage, 93 % in the second, 73 %in the third and 22% in the fourth stage.
Baheya – in Egyptian folklore is Egypt itself, symbolizing Egyptian woman’s beauty. Many songs and anecdotes are widely known in Egypt. ‘Ya Baheya’ and ‘Oyoun Bahyea’ amongst others. #OctoBaheya is a social media campaign launched this October to support the hospital and the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Participants changed their profile pictures in support of the campaign. #OctoBaheya aims at raising awareness of Baheya services, which include diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy, physical and radiation therapies and clinical pharmacy.
